Overview

Gazebo (formerly Ignition; successor of Gazebo Classic) is Open Robotics' modular simulation platform and the default simulator in the ROS 2 workflow. Worlds and robots are described in SDF; a plugin architecture exposes physics engines (DART default, with Bullet and TPE options), sensor models (LiDAR, RGB/depth cameras, IMU, GPS/NavSat, force-torque, contact), and GUI systems. ros_gz bridges topics natively into ROS 2, and building-scale worlds serve everything from single-arm cells to Open-RMF multi-fleet scenarios. It runs headless on CI and doesn't require a GPU, which keeps it the workhorse for regression-testing navigation and control stacks.
