Webots, developed by Cyberbotics (an EPFL spin-off) since 1998 and open-sourced under Apache-2.0 in 2018, is a desktop robot simulator known for its accessibility and breadth. It ships a large library of ready-modeled robots (arms, AMRs, humanoids, drones), sensors (cameras, LiDAR, radar, IMU, distance, touch, GPS) and environments; physics is a customized ODE engine; and controllers can be written in C/C++, Python, Java or MATLAB, with official ROS 2 integration via webots_ros2. Its genuinely cross-platform GUI (Windows/macOS/Linux) and low hardware requirements make it a favorite for education, prototyping and CI, alongside industrial feasibility studies.
