The data standard

Every product in Atlas is described by its specs. These rules make a spec mean the same thing whichever maker writes it, so that people and AI agents can compare products from different makers. The AI agents that fill and clean the catalog follow the same rules as our curators: agents propose, a person approves.

  1. S1One meaning per spec

    Checked on every write

Every spec maps to one concept with a public definition; the names makers use for it are mapped to that concept with the qualifier that tells them apart, never merged away.

    Today: 53 % — 4,377 of 8,299 values mapped to a concept

  2. S2SI units

    Checked on every write

Values are stored and shown in SI units or units accepted for use with them (mm, °, min), the maker's value is kept as stated, and a unit we cannot read is refused, never guessed.

Today: 84 % — 3,658 of 4,354 numeric values with an SI value

  3. S3Qualified values, not free text

    Checked on every write

A value states its level (minimum, typical, nominal, rated, peak, continuous or maximum), what it applies to (per finger) and the condition it holds under (at 6 bar), not prose.

Today: 0 values carrying a qualifier

  4. S4Which way is better

    Applied by search

Each concept says whether a higher value, a lower value or neither is better, and search reads a number that way: at least, at most, or about.

  5. S5Evidence on every value

    Checked on every write

Every value cites its source, with the line it was read from, the page and the date it was last verified; an agent proposes a value only when its source states it word for word.

    Today: 1 % — 57 of 8,299 values with a quoted source

  6. S6Open standards

    Checked by a curator

A concept carries its ETIM feature code where ETIM defines the same feature, and a rating follows the standard that defines it (IEC 60529, IEC 61496, EN ISO 13849-1, IEC 61508 / IEC 62061, ISO 9283).

Today: 57 % — 16 of 28 concepts with an ETIM feature code

  7. S7No near-duplicates

    Checked on every write

A spec is looked up before one is created, so the same fact is never filed under two names.

  8. S8People approve

    Checked by a curator

AI agents propose changes, a curator approves each one, every change to the vocabulary is logged, and members can comment on every concept.

    Today: 520 vocabulary changes logged
