SLAM Toolbox by Steve Macenski (Open Navigation) is the standard 2D laser SLAM solution shipped with ROS 2. It builds on an improved Open Karto scan-matcher with a Ceres-based pose-graph backend, and adds production features the research packages lacked: serialized map continuation (pause and resume mapping across sessions), lifelong mapping experiments, an elastic pose-graph localization mode usable instead of AMCL, synchronous and asynchronous operation, and interactive loop-closure manipulation from RViz. It maps very large indoor spaces (100,000+ sq ft) on modest CPUs and is the default SLAM in the Nav2 ecosystem.
