Nav2 is the successor to the ROS Navigation Stack, rebuilt on ROS 2 for production autonomous mobile robots. A configurable behavior tree orchestrates planning, control, smoothing and recovery servers; layered costmaps fuse LiDAR, depth-camera and other sensor data; and a plugin architecture lets integrators swap global planners (NavFn, Smac Hybrid-A*/State-Lattice), controllers (DWB, MPPI, Regulated Pure Pursuit) and behaviors without touching the core. It supports differential, omnidirectional, Ackermann and legged bases and is maintained by Open Navigation LLC with a large contributor community.
