Overview

OpenCV is the foundational open-source computer-vision library, with 2500+ algorithms spanning image processing, camera calibration, stereo and 3D reconstruction, feature detection/matching, fiducial markers (ArUco/ChArUco), object tracking and a DNN module that runs ONNX models with CUDA, OpenVINO or Vulkan backends. In robotics it is the workhorse layer under nearly every vision pipeline — hand-eye calibration, marker-based pose estimation, preprocessing for ML models. OpenCV 5.0 (June 2026), the first major release in years, modernizes the C++ core, revamps the DNN engine and cleans up the API. Governed by the non-profit OpenCV.org.
